Abstract

If there is ever to be social justice for all, there must be acknowledgement and implementation of Human Rights; among the rights mentioned in the UN Declaration of Human Rights, 1948, is included the Right to Work. This human birthright implies the right to food, shelter, and education that are the foundation for fitness to work. The ethical imperative to live by one’s own earning rests on the right to work; they are interlinked. In the view propounded by Sri Vethathiri Maharishi, a contemporary philosopher of Tamil Nadu, the right to work and the moral duty to earn one’s livelihood are fundamental for the peace, happiness and health of society.
